OUR JANUARY 2012 TEACHING SERIES: A Community of Worship
Posted by dawson in Uncategorized on January 4, 2012

It is easy to assume in a movement like the Vineyard that we’ve got it all figured out when it comes to worship. However, church history shows that such assumptions are fatal and we can find ourselves with all reputation and no reality.
We never get past our need to move overcome these kinds of presumptions and be renewed afresh in an understanding of our highest calling which is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Indeed, it is a lifelong pursuit to explore what this means more deeply – biblically and practically.
So, it’s back to basics as we enter the new year. The biblical setting for worship had never been ‘me and Jesus,’ it has always been communal and corporate. God’s ‘house’ has always been more about his ‘people.’ How does this speak to our gatherings of worship and how critical they are to truly encountering God? What is the importance of ‘place’ and worship ‘space?’ Does beauty matter? Why are our Sunday gatherings so critical if most of our Christian life is lived elsewhere?
And… what is the relationship between this topic and doing justice, the series we just completed last fall from Micah 6:8? Scripture reveals that truly loving God and placing him first results in justice. Idolatry results in oppression. How does that work?
For all of our efforts, the greatest offering we have to the world is community in the presence of God. It is what distinguishes us. Worship is our highest and most appropriate response to this reality, it establishes it, it sustains it, and if it impacts the most broken places of our world. In worship, we are synced with God’s nature and formed into a community of justice, caring for the orphan, the widow and the stranger, just like God does – the one whom we worship.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).

Pastor’s notes: Fall Teaching Series Abstract

Fall Sunday Teaching Series: Micah 6:8 – It’s All There!
Justice is trendy today. From the democratic reforms in the middle east and other parts of the world, to the ‘we,’ campaign with youth across our country, to the antipoverty activism on Commercial Drive, justice is ‘in.’
Yet, proactively pursuing justice can be tricky. Evil can never be reduced to social class, political stripe, race, religion, or gender. We dare not pursue justice without being unaware of the darkness in our own hearts. The pursuit of justice has sometimes produced the most unjust actions. Communism was an attempt to achieve social and economic justice – without God. The result was the genocide of millions by Stalin, Pol Pot and others.
So, are we just jumping on a bandwagon? Read the rest of this entry »
