THE THEME: WHY DO SOME OF THE BEST LETTERS COME FROM PRISON? STAYING FOCUSED IN A WORLD OF DISTRACTIONS
We live in a world that is changing at an unprecedented rate accompanied with information overload and media bombardment – both from outside the church, and inside. In addition, options that are available to invest our time and treasure can sometimes be overwhelming, resulting in one of two extremes: either we become over-extended to the point of burnout or, we become paralyzed to the point of inaction. There is nothing like prison or near-death experiences to help re-focus you as to what is most important and rekindle your passion. This is the context from which Paul wrote and the circumstance in which the Philippian church was born. Philippians is about focus and keeping the main thing the main thing with eternity in view. Becoming unfocused, distracted and scattered drains us of joy, causing burnout. Keeping the main things in view and investing in what truly matters and lasts, results in an abiding joy – even, and perhaps even more so, in the face of adversity and suffering. With all the chaos, upheaval and uncertainty facing them, how did Paul and the Philippians do it? What eternal lessons drawn here continue to speak to our time – even if times have changed?
